Making Your Own Way
Does this happen to you?
I woke up this morning groggy and exhausted. I had really shifted all my gears into overdrive yesterday and I’m FEELING it. But I work for a company that values sustainability in all things, especially employee drive. So my boss said “Hey, no sweat. Come in when you can. Do what you can. I have faith that your best work is a result of your best rested self.” (It helps that my boss is me lol but this is also what I would say to my assistant or anyone I contract to work for me.)
It’s different rallying for a cause you believe in versus rallying because your boss gets upset when you’re not online. The recovery period takes less time because there’s no pressure to get there. When you work for a company or a boss who values your contributions beyond your presence at the computer screen, you really do end up doing your best work. And way more often.
I’m feeling excited and jazzed to ramp things up this year. My personal life in 2023 really put me through a ringer, so I figure this year I really deserve to take the entire holiday season in 2024 all the way off. Meaning, I plan on being out of office for 2 full months at the end of this year.
I know… it’s only January. 😆
But that’s the fantastic thing about making your own way. You’re no longer bound by invisible rules by a machine that gives two shits about whether you live or die. As long as you clock in when you’re alive.
I’m not saying that starting a business is the right move for you. But if you wake up every day feeling groggy and exhausted, knowing you’ll only catch a break after 30 more years of this - or when you’re dead - then maybe it’s time for a change.
